Philosophy On Writing

Writing is a process. It starts with an idea and culminates with a written expression of your thoughts. Many people struggle with writing. Yet, if you examine writing closely, you will find it to largely encompass a process of expressing your ideas and, quite frankly, a series of edits. Here are 10 key points on the secret to writing.

1. Understand
2. Think
3. Organize
4. Write
5. Edit

6. Read
7. Repeat
8. Rest
9. Re-read
10. Present

  1. Understand

Seek first to understand the goal of the writing assignment. Are you trying to persuade someone? Are you being asked to comment on a specific item? What is the goal? Seek first to understand.

  2. Think

Think about what you want to write. Seriously think. Develop an opinion or point of view about the subject. How are you going to back up what you say? Don't write yet. Think. Think. Think.

  3. Organize

Organization is critical. Develop an outline. What is your main point or thesis? What comes first, second, third, and so on in your written piece? Remember, organization helps establish a logical flow to your writing.

  4. Write

Yes.... Just do it. Write. Don't stop. Write. The goal is to get your ideas down on paper. Write.

  5. Edit

Take out the hatchet knife and get rid of the "fluff," i.e., the extra words that do not help communicate your point. (No... don't take out a real hatchet knife.) The idea is to simply get rid of the "fluff."

  6. Read

Read your written document aloud. Don't worry if someone overhears you and perhaps thinks you're a little crazy. Read what you have written aloud and carefully listen to your own words.

  7. Repeat

    Repeat step number 5.

  8. Rest

Set the rough draft of your written work aside and take a break. If you have the time, give yourself a day or two then go on to step 9.

  9. Re-read

Re-read your document and keep editing it. Again, the goal is to edit to the point where you have a clear, grammatically correct document that flows well.

  10. Presentation

Presentation counts. Is your written work typed and formatted nicely? Is it bound? Do you use attractive fonts and headers? Whatever the case might be, the written piece needs to be both well written and well presented.

Follow these ten steps and you will be on the path to writing success.
