Has your high school student started writing his or her college admissions essays? Here are three tips that your student should keep in mind when writing the essays.
1. Think
College admissions essays create an opportunity for admissions officers to get to know your student. Students are able to tell their story. And given that each student is different and presents a unique experience and background, it is important that your student think carefully about what he or she seeks to communicate in the essays. For instance, do you, students, want the reader to know how serious you are about your studies? Do you want an admissions officer to be aware of a particular event that happened in your life, or how that event impacted your time in high school? Is there a specific accomplishment that you are especially proud of? These are all possible topics that you might discuss in your college admissions essays. It is critically important that you take the time to think about the message you want to communicate.
2. Start Early
It is also important to start early. Writing college admissions essays is not something you want to rush. To carefully think about what you want to write and then to actually write and edit your essay(s) takes time. Plan ahead and start early.
3. Pay Attention to Grammar
Grammar matters. You want to make sure that you do a good job of checking your grammar, punctuation, and spelling. The goal is to write a well-organized and grammatically correct essay.
Finally, many students ask if it’s okay to have someone else read their college admissions essays? The short answer is “yes.” However, it is important to remember that college admissions essays need to reflect the student’s words and the student’s voice.
